Staying at the Melville House is like a step back into the past. Built in the 1750's, the Melville House is located in the heart of the Newport's Historic Hill District on gaslit Clarke Street, one of the quietest streets in Newport. Surrounded by interesting old colonial buildings, the Melville House is just one block up from Thames Street, where the Brick Market Place and the harbor front are located. There you can find many of the city's finest restaurants, luxurious sailboats, antique shops and galleries. The Melville House is one of the ew inns in Newport dedicated to Colonial style and decorated in the simple tastes of the early colonists. Each morning breakfast is served in a sunny room featuring homemade granola, muffins, and breads as well as buttermilk biscuits, scones, Yankee cornbread, stuffed French toast, fresh fruit, sourdough pancakes, and Rhode Island Johnnycakes. An afternoon coffee and tea is served everyday featuring refreshments including biscotti, and on cold days, a hearty soup is offered. The innkeepers at the Melville House are always available to share their Newport experiences with guests and do whatever they can to make your stay as pleasant as possible.
